The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) funds our Sinergia project "Virtual Reality and Psychplastogens: A Synergistic Approach to Chronic Pain". In this collaborative project with Petra Schweinhardt , Milan Scheidegger and Felix Scholkmann we will investigate the synergy of embodied virtual reality and psychoplastogens as a novel and interdisciplinary approach to evaluate the therapeutic capacity for (chronic) pain and the effects on neuroplasticity.

"Altered States of Viscereality: Augmenting Breathwork with Bio-Responsive Virtual Reality."

This project aims to create biofeedback interfaces that use breathwork and virtual reality to induce and measure altered states of consciousness. A particular focus of the research will be on the dynamic coupling between 'spaciousness' and inhalation, to explore the contribution of interoceptive signals to our perception of self and space. Our approach is complementary to the ISMiR project which examines the role of interoceptive signals in social interactions with mixed reality applications more generally. The project is funded through the BIAL foundation and awarded to George Fejer (PhD Candidate), Dr. Isabella PasqualiniProf. Oliver Deussen, and  Prof. Bigna Lenggenhager.

We are very excited to be joining the Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour (CASCB) with the interdisciplinary project ISMiR [link: https://www.exc.uni-konstanz.de/collective-behaviour/research/structure/a-individuals-in-the-collective/ismir/].  Tiare Feuchtner [link: https://hci.uni-konstanz.de/members/feuchtner/]  from the Department of Computer and Information Science and Bigna Lenggenhager [link: https://www.psychologie.uni-konstanz.de/en/tt8ftuxr56xq3ybzwr/ag-kognitive-psychologie/person/translate-to-englisch-personen-a-z/translate-to-englisch-prof-dr-bigna-lenggenhager/] have jointly received a CASCB newcomer grant to study the “Thee influence of Interoceptive Signalling on self-other perception, sensorimotor and physiological synchrony, and behaviour in social interactions within Mixed Reality spaces”.This truly interdisciplinary project combines expertise from human-computer interaction, psychology, animal behaviour science, economics, and educational science to develop tools to enhance and display interoceptive cues and investigate its effect on group behaviour and physiology using virtual and augmented reality settings.
We are especially happy to welcome Albert Hermanus van der Veer [link: https://www.psychologie.uni-konstanz.de/en/tt8ftuxr56xq3ybzwr/ag-kognitive-psychologie/person/translate-to-englisch-personen-a-z/translate-to-englisch-dr-albert-van-der-veer/], currently postdoc in our group, and Daniel Immanuel Fink [link: https://hci.uni-konstanz.de/members/research-assistants/daniel-fink/], a PhD student from the Department of Computer and Information Science to the core team of this project.
We can’t wait for project kick-off in early 2023 and look forward to exciting research and fruitful cooperations in the CASCB!
